(1) Whom should I contact? In the first instance, contact Peter Price, Director, CJA Consultants Ltd,
37 Heol St Denys, Lisvane, Cardiff, CF14 0RU, Wales e-mail: peterprice@btinternet.com website: www.cjac.co.uk We are glad to give exploratory advice, without charge. Our combined experience, contacts, and knowledge of the system enables us to estimate the chance of success and how long it may take. Issues are rarely simple. We will think them through with you - as part of your team - contributing constructively to finding solutions which are satisfactory to you and which can be argued through to a successful political conclusion. We have an ‘open book’ policy. We charge on an hourly basis according to the staff used and the nature of the contract.; or on an agreed monthly retainer; or (for research projects) on a fixed agreed fee. We are used to working within specific budgets. It is a question of 'horses for courses'. Often, though not always, the European Commission likes dealing with European level trade associations. From their viewpoint, this is neater and tidier, while it may also be simpler for the organisations concerned. However, the Commission is also aware that European level (or national) level representations are sometimes ‘lowest common denominator’ and so they are increasingly keen to hear other representations. A national trade association may have different interests from the 'average' of the industry across Europe. In such cases, it will wish to ensure its own voice is heard by the European Commission and Parliament. In any case, Commission and MEPs appreciate the grass roots information which comes through contact with national organisations and companies. Similarly, what is to be done when an individual company has - or a small number of companies have – a distinctive interest? An issue may be so important to them, and perhaps not so significant for the trade association, that getting this point of view represented effectively is crucial. In this case the company will make its own contacts. There is no inconsistency in pursuing all three routes together, and
many companies do so. The precise method to be used in a particular case
derives from consideration of timing, importance and cost. CJA Consultants
has clients at all levels, from large to small companies, and European and
national trade associations.
